Mission Statement

Mother’s Milk for Baby’s Health will provide optimal lactation care to the mothers, babies, and families of Northern Michigan through evidence-based practice, compassionate breastfeeding counseling, and an awareness that each family has a unique set of strengths, needs, and goals.

How is a Lactation Consultant different from other lactation professionals?

There are Lactation Educators, Lactation Counselors, and Lactation Consultants. Each of these classifications holds a different set of skills and educational qualifications. The Lactation Educator and Counselor have attended a 40 to 45 hour course in lactation management or teaching, which allows them to teach or counsel mothers who have general breastfeeding questions and concerns. The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) has documented thousands of practice hours before sitting for an internationally standardized exam. Upon passing this exam and proving the required practice has been completed, this individual can call herself a Lactation Consultant, or IBCLC. An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding.
